Salt Rock
Salt Rock is a small town just north of Ballito and Shaka’s Rock on the Dolphin Coast and is a favorite holiday destination for many local South Africans. Salt Rock shares a rich Zulu cultural history with its neighbour Shaka’s Rock. Salt Rock’s name dates back to the days of King Shaka , when his servants would collect dried salt at low tide for trade with the early settlers. It owes much of its history to Basil Hulett and his wife Gwen who started not only the Salt Rock Hotel but went on to develop the town of Salt Rock that is found today. As well as providing some good fishing spots, the main beach has lifeguards and is shark protected. Close to the main beach is a massive tidal pool, which was originally built for guests staying at the hotel. Salt Rock beach is home to the Billabong Pro Concerts that take place during the Billabong Pro surfing competition.
